Where Can You Buy Canadian Auto Insurance?

Canadian Flag

As a law-abiding citizen, you must cover your bases. This includes getting the right auto insurance. Canadian roadway authorities take driving safety seriously. Each of the federal provinces has auto insurance requirements. However, depending on where you live, how you get coverage might vary.

Provincial Auto Insurance Requirements

Each Canadian Province has different auto requirements, just as is the case in the 50 U.S. states. However, Canadian auto insurance does vary from American policies in quite a few ways. This includes the outlets through which Canadian drivers can get their coverage.

In the U.S., auto insurance comes from private companies. But, in Canada, drivers might be able to get their coverage from a private company, a government entity, or both. Depending on where you live, your options for coverage will vary:

  • You can only get your auto insurance through a private insurer if you live in Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Alberta, Yukon, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
  • Saskatchewan, Quebec and British Columbia offer coverage through private insurers and government agencies. You might have to buy certain portions of coverage from the government agencies, and others from the private sector. The respective government agencies are the Saskatchewan Auto Fund, SAAQ (Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec) and the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC).

Insuring Your Car in Canada

Generally, Canadian drivers must carry minimum levels of auto insurance. Most of Canada requires $200,000 in liability coverage. Quebec requires a $50,000 minimum liability policy. Beyond the requirements, drivers usually have options to choose extra coverage that suits their needs. For example, you might want to buy collision and comprehensive coverage to help cover damage to your vehicle.

To determine how best to insure your vehicle:

  • Research your province’s auto insurance requirements. Then, contact a private insurer and your respective provincial agency to get coverage. Always make sure you carry coverage in compliance with local laws where you live.
  • Consider your car’s value and the risks you might face on the road. You might need to increase your coverage to better protect yourself, your vehicle and others.

Have a thorough discussion with your insurer about the auto protection you need. Your Heritage Insurance LTD agent can often help guide you in selecting and enrolling in a strong policy. For more information, contact us today.
