The holidays are here once again, and that means plenty of people will soon be hitting the roads to shop, celebrate and visit friends and family. With more vehicles on the road, there's a higher risk of accidents, so it's imperative that all drivers remain alert on the road.
The following tips can help you stay safe behind the wheel. We've also included some tips for older drivers, as there are specific concerns they should keep in mind before hitting the road that are less pronounced with younger drivers.
Collision Prevention Tips
- Communicate with drivers and pedestrians your intended actions while driving.
- Check your mirrors frequently.
- When changing lanes, signal appropriately and then watch traffic by glancing over your shoulder to check your blind spot.
- Always check thoroughly behind your vehicle before you back up.
- Choose routes which are less congested and busy.
- Keep your air conditioner or heater on the lowest possible setting to minimize background noise.
- Check for worn-out exhaust pipes and replace them before they become noisy and dangerous.
- Watch for flashing lights of rescue or police vehicles and be alert at railway crossings.
- Visually check your turn signals if you cannot hear the sound of the indicator telling you it is working.
Compensation for Changes Brought About by Aging
- Make regular medical and vision checkups at least once per year.
- Avoid driving in stressful traffic situations.
