Driver Safety Tips To Watch Out For Cyclists - Wet weather conditions affect your ability to see other road users, especially cyclists. Be sure to give cyclists plenty of room on wet roads, slow down and ensure your windshield wipers are in good condition
- Plan turns and lane changes well in advance and be aware of cyclist routes
- Never use your horn, unless necessary, when passing a cyclist
- Leave lots of room when passing a cyclist
- Check for cyclists prior to left or right turns
- Never follow too close to a cyclist (cyclists can usually stop quicker than a motor vehicle)
- Keep at least a 3-4 second following distance to a cyclist
- Scan around parked vehicles for cyclists
- Use extra caution when driving in parking lots, playground zones and school areas
- Signal your intention well in advance so a cyclist can see what you are planning to do
- Check your mirrors every 5 to 8 seconds to keep aware of your surroundings
- Be aware of bicycle paths

For Drivers | For Cyclists | When turning right, check the curb lane and shoulder check on your right to ensure there are no cyclists that you may cut off. | When riding your bike, be on the lookout for vehicles than may turn wide at intersections. | Look ahead for any oncoming vehicle or cyclists. Check the crosswalk for pedestrians. | When riding your bike, be on the lookout for vehicles that may be about to turn left. | Cyclists need a meter on either side of them as a safety zone. Do not pass too close. Always change lanes to pass. | When being passed by a vehicle always watch that they don’t come into your lane too early and be prepared to slow down or stop. | When opening your door, be on the lookout for cyclists and pedestrians.
